Cyrenians Suppers

After the fun of summer, it’s quite understandable to feel the September blues. People slip back into routine, counting down the days to the winter holidays. The trick is to find things to look forward to, keeping spirits high. And if you’re a foodie like me, those “things” almost always involve food or drink.
With that in mind, I turned to Cyrenians to see what delicious events they had lined up.
If you’re not familiar with the organisation, Cyrenians is a charity founded in 1968 by a group of students disillusioned by homelessness. They developed a residential community model, where people who had been homeless lived alongside volunteers. Fast forward 63 years, and Cyrenians are still tackling the causes and consequences of homelessness. Among their many initiatives, they host food events to raise money, ranging from themed suppers to cookery classes that bring authentic cuisines from places such as Thailand, Persia and Singapore to Scotland.
Earlier this year, I attended the inaugural Singaporean Supper, a feast of colour and flavour hosted at Coffee Saints. The atmosphere was warm and convivial; depending on the size of your group, you might even share a table with fellow food lovers. The food was served buffet-style, and for those who enjoy a drink with dinner, the event is BYOB.

For the evening, Chef Ruzita brought her heart and heritage to the table. Each recipe was recreated from memory. The stars of the night were the original satay sauce (peanut-based) and the famous laksa, a classic Singaporean dish of noodles in a rich, spicy coconut-based soup. The buffet also featured fish balls, seaweed tempura, eggs, prawns, tofu and more that you can add to the laksa accordingly to your taste.
A new Singaporean Supper Night is coming up on 19 September, and there’s still time to book. Tickets are good value for money – the portions are generous enough to fill a doggy bag – and, of course, you’ll be supporting a good cause.
My next Cyrenians experience will be the Syrian Supper this December, and I can’t wait.
