On a crisp November evening, The Bonnington glows on its corner spot on the eponymous road, inviting locals in with the promise of comfort food, beer, wine and cocktails.
Run since 2024 by Carlo Carozzi—also the force behind the award‑winning street food venture The Peruvian—this neighbourhood pub has quickly become a welcoming hub. The no. 11 bus stops right at the door.
Once inside, the pub manages to be both spacious and cosy at the same time. In the main bar there are warm red seats and large windows that flood the room with sunlight. At the back you can choose to sit at tables or in a snug booth. Sport is broadcast live in the front bar.
The menu is all about hearty, homemade dishes. I start with local favourite Findlays of Portobello Haggis Bon Bons, crisp outside and soft, spicy within, paired cheekily with HP sauce. Rachel opts for Gordal Olives from the selection of Bar Snacks. For mains, my Bangers and Mash arrive with giant sausages and a generous pour of onion gravy. Rachel tucks into a double‑patty Moving Mountains Burger, fluffy chips on the side and mayo for dipping. I save room for dessert: Apple Crumble with Custard flecked with real vanilla, its buttery topping yields to soft, sweet fruit—just like your gran used to make.
Carozzi’s bar pedigree (The Voodoo Rooms, Dragonfly) meets his Peruvian roots in Scotland’s largest Pisco list. My Pisco Sour (Barsol Quebranta, lime, sugar, egg white) is sharp yet silky, served in a smart glass. Across the table, Rachel’s Margarito (Barsol Quebranta, Ancho Reyes, lime, Tajin) balances ancho chilli warmth with a delicate spice dusting. For those skipping alcohol, the golden fizz of Inca Kola offers a playful alternative—like Irn Bru kissed with lemon verbena. Great with The Bonnington’s Bar Snacks for a sweet and salty sensation.
Carozzi sums up the ethos of The Bonnington simply:
“It’s a comfy and welcoming bar where I want people to relax, chat and have fun. There are no pretensions here and everyone is welcome—including dogs. Drop by for a quick refreshment or stay longer and eat with friends, family and loved ones. My aim is to create a hospitable space for all.”
With keen pricing, a laid back vibe and friendly accomplished staff, The Bonnington is everything you want from a neighbourhood local.
