Nor’ Loft is the rooftop bar of the Market Street Hotel opposite Waverley Station. Take the elevator to the seventh floor to an open-plan lounge with large windows overlooking the city. A flickering fire, eclectic designer furniture and views of the Edinburgh skyline make this champagne bar a classy cocoon to escape to.
Bite was invited to sample the fondue on offer through September and October for £72 for two people.
But of course, we ordered champagne too, after all, it is the perfect palate cleanser. Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut is the house sip and I can’t think of a better way to decompress than to enjoy a flute while luxuriating in such zen-like surroundings.
Onto our fondue though. It’s an indulgent mixture of Nor’ Loft’s signature Menabrea beer and smoked cheddar cheese with an array of bites to dip. These include rosemary roasted potatoes, oregano and basil meatballs and smoked salmon babka. There are also some glossy Jalapenos, crudities and my favourite juicy, chewy chorizo pieces. I mean chorizo and cheese is a very moreish match.
I was not fully aware, however, of fondue etiquette so I apologize to my friend for all my faux pas and offer a few pointers for readers:
Double dipping is 'verboten'.
Use your fork to transfer cheese-drenched items to your plate.
Dropping an item can lead to forfeits.
Champagne is a good match as the acidity helps with digestion
Eat with your teeth, the fork should not go directly into your mouth.
We visited on a Friday night in September and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Autumn and/or Friday night. If you like a classy joint, go to Nor’ Loft. (S. Wilson)
