Sometimes I write restaurant reviews because I am asked to. Sometimes I write them because I am inspired. When you go on holiday the anticipation equates to free happiness in the run-up to your trip and it's the same with a restaurant review whereby you can relive the experience through words. Sometimes I am compelled to do this to extend the happiness which brings me to Jocks Grill-House in Kirkcaldy (note the lack of apostrophe; its presence may be deemed to be up itsel').
I wasn’t holding out much hope, to be honest. The menu is meat and fake meat-focused and looked pricey for lunch in the ‘lang toon’ but I went along with some colleagues, their choice, and it suited a meat-eating combined with vegan and vegetarian party.
It is a spacious airy restaurant with multicoloured ethnic umbrellas and lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
Our food took some time to appear which meant that all was being cooked fresh to order.
I don’t eat burgers regularly so I chose two dishes from the tapas menu: prawn tempura with teriyaki sauce and black pudding fritters with blue cheese sauce. Lordy! The latter was superb. A rich cheesy sauce is incredibly moreish with the soft spicy fritters. Freshness is key with the fritters clearly, benefiting from being cooked to order in sparkling clean oil. I had no complaints about the tempura either with big juicy prawns seared in a frilly batter and a sweet hot dipping sauce. A non-alc Menabrea is the perfect lunchtime drink to accompany the food.
Across and around the table my colleague is enjoying Black Magic: a double beef burger topped with award-winning bacon, black pudding and that cheese sauce again all presented in a massive charcoal bun. At £19.99 this sounds expensive but it could easily feed two and comes with fries.
The non-meat eaters are happy with their fake dogs served with ketchup, mustard and fries.
The menu now intrigues me given the quality of the food, it is also extensive including dirty vegan scran, desserts like tall, dark and covered in chocolate (three fudge brownies drenched in ganache with ice cream), cocktails - dragon fruit mojito, amaretto sours, and parma violet brambles, Mexican nachos, fajitas, burritos, poutine, baos, fried pickles, Philly cheese steak, classic Scottish breakfast items and a whole lotta more. You get the picture.
I am salivating in anticipation of my next menu sampling. Bring it on home Jock.
