On 26th April, Haddington Farmers’ Market marks a quarter-century of supplying fresh, locally sourced produce to the people of Haddington and East Lothian. Since 2000, the market has become a monthly fixture in the local community, supporting local farmers and artisans while bringing people together in a vibrant, welcoming space.Val Shields, organiser and former stallholder of the Trusty Crust Organic Bakery, said:
"Haddington Farmers’ Market has been vital in supporting local businesses since it started in April 2000, when farmers' markets were emerging across Scotland as a meaningful alternative to supermarkets. I remember that first market well - it was incredibly busy, and our bakery stall had completely sold out by 10 am! "

Val continues explaining that for small businesses, farmers’ markets are a lifeline, offering an invaluable low-cost, low-risk opportunity to test the market, engage directly with customers, and refine new product ideas. Many local businesses began their journey at Haddington Farmers’ Market and have since thrived, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy. It’s a win-win, as market day also benefits the wider community - local shops and cafés, and high street businesses see a boost, as visitors from Edinburgh and Midlothian come regularly, as well as tourists, which helps drive prosperity for the town and county.
Haddington Farmers’ Market is a staple of East Lothian’s vibrant food scene, offering shoppers an unrivalled selection of locally-produced goods from small independent producers. With a maximum of 28 stalls, the market strikes a perfect balance, offering a diverse range of fresh, high-quality products while providing a welcoming atmosphere where shoppers can engage directly with the producers, ask questions and learn more about the food they’re buying. It's a real alternative to the supermarkets.

Convenience is key - visitors can easily access the market on foot, by bus, or by car. Walkable from the town centre, with unlimited free parking nearby and excellent public transport links, it’s an effortless and enjoyable shopping experience for locals and visitors alike.
Haddington Farmers' Market made history as the first British Farmers' Market to trade abroad. Vals says:
We proudly took Scottish produce to the Comice Agricole in Aubigny, France, in 2008, 2010 and 2012, showcasing the best of local food to an international audience.

To celebrate this landmark anniversary, stallholder and chef, Charlie Hutchison, will lead cooking demonstrations, highlighting the breadth of range available at the market. From farm-fresh vegetables to artisanal meats, breads, jams, chutneys, desserts and vegan options, these sessions will inspire shoppers with delicious ways to prepare locally sourced ingredients. Individual stallholders will also be offering product tastings, plus there will be live performances by Haddington Pipe Band and local accordionist Orla Kelly.
