Adding yet another fabulous course to our Edinburgh Fringe buffet: Eggbreak, Notting Hill’s cult brunch spot, is popping up at Gleneagles Townhouse. From now until the end of August, you’ll find some of its best-loved breakfasts guest-starring on the Spence menu. Even more exciting, it’s inspired the Social Bitches to rise BEFORE midday!
We’re joined by fellow foodie and renowned early bird Kerry Teakle, who brings more than enough perkiness for us all. She’s also excited by the promise of a Spicy Chicken Sandwich with pickled ginger, cream cheese and brioche bun. Which could explain why she’s arrived SO ridiculously early, roughly 25 minutes ahead of us.

Anyhoo … three long blacks later, one refusal to try the matcha, and these Bitches are ready to do some serious damage. Our first stop, a little granola with date yoghurt and blueberries, paired with a wonderfully refreshing Strawberry Sunshine, which combines strawberry puree, lemon juice & soda water to dazzling effect.
Now feeling almost human, we’re diving into the Eggs Benedict with streaky bacon and brown butter hollandaise - gorgeous! - followed by a saucy Egg, Bacon & Cheese Toastie, a cheeky nibble of someone’s Shakshuka [ will totes order this next time ] and a gargantuan bite of Teakle’s spicy chicken sandwich.

Which, by the way, is really quite something, thanks to its star ingredient: Scotch Bonnet jam - bringing an intense, fruity, slightly smoky flavour to the mix, along with a teensy dash of heat. We highly recommend.
As for our final dish: well … what kind of monster could possibly resist the Nutella French Toast?? WOWSERS! This wonderfully sinful dish is generous on the Nutella, then encrusted in cornflakes, and accompanied by both mascarpone plus an indulgent drizzle of maple syrup. Ding ding ding!!
So … while getting up this early does mean additional medication for one’s obvious drinking problem, we are most definitely big fans of the Eggbreak experience. And besides, there are easily three dishes we haven’t tried yet. Yes … Turkish Eggs, Mexican Eggs, and Ari’s Pancakes with salted caramel butter, we are talking about you!
