Family friendly pizza

Local, seasonal, organic, independent; we have lots of restaurants in Edinburgh that tick these boxes but sometimes it's good to 'branch out.' so when I received an invite to review Pizza Express I thought, why the hell not.

The Stockbridge branch has been around for 15 years and has a prime location with outside seating next to the Water of Leith. Mr Bite and me visited on a Sunday evening and the atmosphere was casual, buzzy and family-friendly.

I quite fancied the 'Veneziana' with its topping of red onions, capers, olives, sultanas and pine kernels. This is one of the classic range of pizzas but I was going to choose it on a 'Romana range base' which is thinner and crispier. Decisions decision and my eye drifted to the' Legerra range' which are all under 500 calories. Thus with pudding in mind I finally opted for the Padana Legera;  goats' cheese, mozzarella, spinach, red & caramelised onions, and garlic oil (£9.70).

Whilst I prevaricated, Mr Bite had quickly chosen, Diavolo, hot spiced beef, pepperoni, red onions, Tabasco, hot green, jalapeno peppers.

The bases were good and just fired around the edges. My pizza was the size and shape of a 78" vinyl with the middle poked out and filled with rocket salad.  The topping was tasty. However, the caramelised onion was ultra-sweet and I would have preferred less of it and more goats' cheese. The balance was slightly wrong. I couldn't resist a piece of Mr B's diavolo and thought it was excellent, really piquant, huge and with lots of topping in easy to manage bites. He drank a Peroni Gran Riserva which was strong and malty, a perfect foil to the pizza.

The menu contains lots of low calorie and gluten-free choices and for dessert you can choose Dolcetti, mini puddings that come with coffee. Caffè Reale for me then; a dollop of marscapone circled by baby figs with cinnamon & white wine spiced syrup, a macchiato to the side and I was a very happy bunny. Mr Bite had chosen a generous slice of chocolate fudge cake with double cream and reused to share.

Pizza Express is unstuffy and inexpensive which makes it a very attractive proposition for a lot of people as does the fact that it is very child friendly. A very good choice for a lazy Sunday meal.
