Bruntsfield's best bistro

There's something about a good neighbourhood restaurant that makes you feel immediately welcome and relaxed. Café Grande is a great example of a local eatery done properly. From the burgundy and dark wood-grain continental style, to the bubbly friendliness of the waiting staff, to the amount of room between tables (good for personal space and intimate chatter), Café Grande ticked all the right boxes for my weeknight visit.

My best buddy and I made ourselves comfortable and sipped a glass of Torres Vina Sol (£13.90) whilst perusing the menus. I ordered a warm tartlet of caramelised onion, goat's cheese and fresh herbs (£4.95), served with a deliciously different pear and rosemary jelly. My partner's Café Grande Thai fishcake (£4.50) was simply a single light cake perched on a colourful salad with crispy rice noodles. The flavour of authentic kaffir lime was noted and appreciated.

For mains I ordered a stack of roasted haloumi cheese with grilled vegetables (£9.50), drizzled with a sweet red pepper cream. My partner had a traditional urge and enjoyed his Crombie's Auld Reekie sausages with vegetables and mash (£10.95), mopping up the very last of the rich sauce with some chunky bread.

We were seated next to the sweets refrigerator, and so had already picked out our choices from the extensive homemade cake selection. I felt I had to try the chef's special chocolate and Baileys cheesecake, whilst my partner found the lemon and ginger torte equally compelling (both £3.95 or £4.20 with ice cream or custard).

Our meal at Café Grande was one of those lovely occasions where the surroundings, food and service all combined in perfect balance. It's been around for about fifteen years, and will undoubtedly be around for fifteen more. If you're not local to the area, it's a great excuse for a romantic post-dinner stroll through the Meadows on a summer evening.
