Lunch at The Kitchin last week courtesy of my other half! A month in advance we could only get a table at 2.15 but this worked really well, allowing time for a pre lunch G&T made with the excellent award winning North Berwick Gin served with complimentary nibbles.

We chose the three course set lunch at £28.50, started with an amuse bouche of warm beetroot, horseradish cream, bacon and croutons, a great combination. There are three choices for each course, first I had artichoke open ravioli with ham hock which looked and tasted so fresh and vibrant but was surpassed by my partner's warm plaice and squid pâté,

The mains were my fillet of hake with gnocchi and shellfish, perfectly cooked and delicious but again his choice just edged mine, rump of hogget, a young sheep one or two years old, with a boudin of sweetbreads, roasted carrots and fondant potato. This was perfection to me, the sweetbread boudin amazing, I almost leant over to the neighbouring table where one fussy diner had left their one untouched, sacrilege in my book. We then shared a lovely rhubarb crumble soufflé, followed by a selection of cheeses at an added supplement of £7.

Wine prices are at a level you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant however among the bottles there are some less expensive gems including our choice of a Spanish 2012 Priorat red wine, one of my all time favourite wine regions, at a decent price of £41.

The restaurant has expanded since our last visit but has managed to retain the intimate feel; the décor and serving plates all complement the nature to plate philosophy of the food. The service was good and unstuffy, lunch remains great value and a good way to sample The Kitchin. (S. McQuaid)
