In line with this month's retro/vintage theme those nice people at The Whiski Rooms have recommended Curiositas from the BenRiach distillery in the heart of Speyside near Elgin.

BenRiach is an independent distillery. Established in 1898 it was then closed until 1965 when it passed through the hands of Glenlivet which became Seagram which became Pernod Ricard. As part of a giant portfolio it didn't find its feet but in 2004 an independent consortium led by industry veteran and enthusiast Billy Walker changed all that.

Curisitas is aged in bourbon barrels. It won Silver Medals from The International Wine and Spirits Competition in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 (best in class) and Jim Murray awarded it a score of 95.5/100 in his Whisky Bible 2009.

Tasting Notes

Colour: light gold

Nose: Top notes of antiseptic, medicinal and smoky peat with honey and vanilla underneath; no seasalt as with peaty Islays'. It's much softer than that but still full of character.

On the Palate: Surprisingly soft , sweet and honeyed at first followed by a rich, full mouth feel of malt and finally an antiseptic kick followed by peppery spices. Very complex, I got some bitter cocoa too.

Finish: Very long and lingering.

Taste with: For a food match try it with strong meats such as game or mature cheddar with oatcakes. The latter would pick out the cereal notes. Haggis would pick up on the spicy, peppery notes and it would make a perfect Burns Supper whisky.
