THE BLUE BLAZER HAS OCCUPIED A PROMINENT POSITION ON THE CORNER OF SPITTAL STREET AND BREAD STREET FOR OVER 100 YEARS, WITH ITS NAME UNCHANGED SINCE THE 1970s - THE SIGN OF A REAL STAYER. WITH ITS CORNER-OPENING DOOR, THE INTERIOR IS BRIGHT AND AIRY, WITH A MORE SUBDUED SNUG BAR TO THE REAR. THE REGULAR CLIENTELE INCLUDE ART STUDENTS AND ACTORS.

There is an impressive range of real ales, such as Dark Island (4.6%, £3.10), Trade Winds (4.3%, £3.00), Bramling Cross (4.2%, £3.00), Independence (4.3%, £3.00) and Trashy Blonde (4.1%, £3.00). I sampled two from the opposite ends of the spectrum, Trashy Blonde and Dark Island. Trashy Blonde was everything its name suggests, light, sweet, frothy and refreshing. But wow, what a contrast with Dark Island ! A full-bodied dark liquid, visually reminiscent of Guinness, but with a rich aroma redolent of freshly-roasted coffee beans, that lasted right to the end of the pint. A definite must-try.

There are always eight or nine real ales on offer, with a variety of guest beers every week, mostly sourced from Scottish breweries and micro-breweries, plus other beers and ciders. But do not expect to find 'cooking lagers' on offer - here you will find Amstel, Sagres from Portugal, Kronenburg, Black Isle Blonde and a new addition, Edelweiss. Exotic cocktails include Earl Grey Mar-tea-ni - Martin Miller's Gin, Earl Grey Tea, Lemon Juice and La Maury Cane Sugar. And if you are looking for spirits, there is an incredibly comprehensive menu, comprising 10 cognacs, 15 gins, including one from Doune called Boe, 47% distilled from hand-picked botanicals and spices, 20 bourbons, 50 malts - and an amazing selection of 75 rums, from countries around the world, from Antigua to Venezuela. For those interested, the Blue Blazer runs a monthly Rum club with free tastings - call for details.

This is a well-run hostelry, a pub for serious drinkers, managed by an enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable manager. It comes as no surprise to see that amongst other awards the pub won The City Pub of the Year Award in 2007. I look forward to a return visit.
