There's nothing like a leisurely Sunday lunch where you can kick back and enjoy some tasty food guilt-free knowing you have the rest of the day to digest and relax.

Thus Mr Bite and I decided to spend a recent Sunday checking out The Broughton. Formerly The Phoenix, the site is well-kent to many Edinburgh old-timers.

The gastro pub is now owned by the same folk that have The West Room and The Seafood Ristorante in St Andrews.

Renovation is tasteful; mustard and sea-green fabrics and tables are adorned with simple, sparkling, classy glassware.

I had a starter of Salmon marinated Asian-style in ginger and soy and topped with a thick crust of toasted sesame seeds. Matchsticks of Granny Smith apple, discs of heritage beet and horseradish cream completed the plate. A glass of golden Chenin Blanc with nutty, almond notes was a delicious complement to each mouthful.

Across the table, Mr Bite enjoyed a colourful tower of Fish Cakes crowned with a triumphant slice of red piquillo pepper.

Roast Beef comes next for him and importantly the Yorkshire pud is pretty good, a rich batter and a bit of crunch on the edges. For me the pud is a barometer of the Sunday roast, if you crack this, you are well on your way. Roasties are pleasantly crisped and long carrots are elegantly sliced.

I enjoyed a delicious piece of haddock with mashed potato, kale and a creamy, wholegrain mustard sauce.

Blackberry pavlova, however, was a bit of a letdown. While very pretty the meringue could have been slightly caramelized, and a big dod of cream was needed to introduce the berries to the brittle sugary meringue.

Mr Bite's sticky toffee pud though was everything you want from this dish and the sauce an absolute triumph. So much so that I am resolute to return and sample it all for myself.

The Broughton is up to the same high spec as the West Room in terms of food and décor. A shout out to the staff is also deserved as they were extremely attentive and friendly.
