Let me introduce you to the Middle Easter Affogato; Cardamom and Saffron ice cream with thick Arabic coffee.  The waitress in Pomegranate Express tells me someone ordered the exact same ice cream and coffee the night before and proceeded to chuck the latter over the former – just like me.

Pomegranate Express is opposite the Festival Theatre and offers street food in a canteen-like atmosphere. It is part of the Middle Eastern 'mini-chain' that includes Hanam’s, Laila’s, Souk and older sibling Pomegranate which is near The Playhouse Theatre. I ordered a Buddha Bowl, which, for the uninitiated, is the new buzz term for salad in a bowl.  Mine incorporated excellent crispy tasty fried and battered cauliflower, which I can't wait to have  again as a solo, small dish Quaranabit. There is also beetroot, couscous with chilli and salt through it, and feta cubes too, so the bed of shredded lettuce is welcome for balance on the palate. The dish would have benefited from a minty yoghurt dressing.

Middle Eastern music, the café atmosphere, prices and a small dish menu makes this eatery perfect for the studenty Southside or for a cheap pre-theatre feast. I paid £17 for a zero alcohol Cobra, Buddha bowl, ice cream, coffee and baklava to take away.

The mezze menu will be familiar to those that frequent the restaurants mentioned above. You can choose from dishes like Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, stuffed vine leaves, Falafel, Halloumi fries in pomegranate sauce, spicy Lebanese sausages in tomato sauce.

When it comes to desserts, expect paradise. Vanilla Cheesecake comes drizzled in honey and Baklawa or topped with Turkish Delight and rose syrup. I've mentioned the ice cream which also comes with sponge balls soaked in syrup.

I left this eatery planning multiple return visits. Pomegranate  Express serves the type of food I like at negligible prices. Just a shame I can’t take home *that Affogato* (S Wilson)
