Vittoria goes veggie - the original al fresco on Leith Walk

Sitting in the warmth with the sun on my face, I reflect on how many times I’ve sat in this spot on Leith Walk, watching the people walking up and down.

The outdoor seating area of Vittoria’s Italian restaurant has been a favourite haunt of mine for around 15 years. With so many other al fresco options now on Leith Walk, I don’t find myself at Vittoria as often as I once did, but my visit is special this time, to try their veggie menu for Vegetarian Week.

The Vittoria group of restaurants (La Favorita, Made in Italy, Vittoria on the Bridges, Divino Enoteca and newly opened fish and chip restaurant Bertie’s) is ever expanding, and their menus change to keep up with the times.

It was heartening to see a whole Vegan section of the menu, but the plain and simple vegetarian items were dotted through the menu rather than all in one place.

No matter, I knew the menu pretty well and funghi pizza was what I was hankering for.

Busy businessman date was on his lunch break (he had to extend it somewhat, what a shame!), and opted for the healthy vegan Aubergine – half an aubergine filled with confit aubergine, tomato, pepper and olives, glazed with vegan cheese on a bed of cherry tomato sauce and French beans. It was declared the ‘perfect lunch for a sunny day’, flavoursome and light.

The Macaroni cheese croquettes were a mystery that needed solving. A bit heavier, fried breadcrumb kept the macaroni in place and filled businessman’s belly.

I had a Tomato and Panzanella salad, delightfully bright and lightly dressed. Even though menus change and times change, the Vittoria family always use excellent produce – tasty tomatoes and seasonal vegetables are what you need if you want to get the vegetarians in. Simple and easy to understand.

I got a tan that day, and businessman reluctantly went back to his desk. (T. Griffen)
