Occupying tiny premises on Elm Row, I was keen to try Lucky Yu as soon as it opened last October. Since its opening, the restaurant has earned exceptional reviews on Google and Tripadvisor, and having now been myself, I am only sorry I didn't make it sooner.

Asian street food is the concept, one that is increasingly popular these days in both restaurants and food markets. Why have one large meal, when you can sample a wide variety of different flavours and textures? Despite this being a common theme, however, Lucky Yu has taken the concept to a whole new level, fusing cuisines to offer some exciting options.

I had initially dismissed the cheeseburger gyoza and other similar western/Asian style fusion dishes as a bit of a gimmick, but I can confirm that the Ichiban chicken gyoza with blue cheese sauce are absolutely delicious, and the humble bao bun will never be the same again now I've tasted one made with lobster tail and chorizo!

What really stood out was the care and attention given to every dish and accompaniment; from the starter of steamed edamame to the side of sautéed seasonal greens and the homemade gyoza dipping sauce, everything was bursting with flavour.

Other highlights were the tiger prawn gyoza, xinjiang lamb gyoza, and the dessert of a deep-fried mini bao served with homemade ice cream, miso butterscotch and crushed pistachios, which rounded things off perfectly.

On my next visit, I will be sure to try the recommended signature wings, the katsu sando (panko coated chicken or butternut squash sandwich) and smoked shitake mushroom bao bun.

With a BYOB policy and most options ranging between £4 and £7, diners can try lots of varied dishes without spending a fortune, particularly if visiting as part of a group. The problem will be resisting the urge to order seconds and thirds!

Offering fantastic food, friendly service and a cosy, relaxed vibe, Lucky Yu is definitely a welcome addition to the Leith Walk restaurant scene. (D Spencer)
