In the eight years since its launch, Loudons in Fountainbridge has grown from a counter service sandwich shop to one of the most popular cafes in the city.

Its brunch menu is so good that, on a Saturday and Sunday, people travel from all over Edinburgh to queue for a table. Fortunately, brunchers in the north of the city won't have so far to go for their 'Eggs Bennys' anymore, with a brand new Loudons now open in the New Waverley development, just off the Royal Mile.

It’s a perfect location, bright and modern, and perhaps even larger than their current café. The business will be run by the brothers at the helm of Loudons Fountainbridge, Chris Loudon and Douglas Humphrey, who worked together with the family and all their staff to design the new restaurant. There seems to be a real family bond behind the project, the Executive Chef Peter Christensen originally came on board as a temp and has developed his career with the company.

So what can diners expect? As at Fountainbridge, the varied breakfast, brunch and lunch menus offer a little something for all tastes and diets. Alongside the usual full breakfasts, pancakes, filled rolls and scrambled eggs, there are some more unusual options like the ‘power bowl’ with pulled pork, avocado, new potatoes, Puy lentils and poached eggs. The café is also sensitive to vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets, with lots of excellent choices – the ever popular poached eggs and avocado can be enjoyed in a Mediterranean and Mexican style, as well as the basic. However, it's really the ‘Bennys' that bring diners to Loudons, with a huge range on offer. I think the 'Louisiana', with smoked salmon, Cajun-spiced crayfish and chipotle coriander sauce, has to be the most intriguing for me.

The lunch menu has brunch options alongside both healthy (superfood pancakes or vegan chilli) and not so healthy choices (mac & cheese open sandwich or beef & haggis burger). And of course, there is always afternoon tea!

Loudons is definitely on to a winner, with brand new airy premises and a great team behind them. The well-established brunch and lunch menus will be predictably popular, but Edinburgh foodies will be keen to try the new evening menu which is planned for launch in the summer. (D Spencer)
