Padrino Pizza, Dundee
New Review
123 Nethergate,

The best pizza I have had since Rome, says Mr Bite with a smile.

I am not sure I would go this far but Padrino’s opposite the Dundee Centre for Contemporary Arts in the Nethergate has surprised us.

We were expecting an unremarkable fast food joint but this pizzeria is small, friendly and authentic.

Tins of fat Mutti tomatoes stand sentry behind the counter alongside packets of Espresso coffee. Prosecco, Malfy gin, bottles of spirits and a range of Italian wines also line the shelves and a Sicilian lemon flavoured G&T with Fever Tree fizz has my name on it.

A couple of Negronis sail past us to the next table whilst we peruse a selection of about ten pizzas with tasty sounding toppings; Mr Bite chooses one with that ‘all the rage’ njuda, peppers and buffalo mozzarella and I go for provolone, mushrooms and artichokes.

The pizzas leave the wood-fired oven pretty swiftly and are delivered to out table. The sauce has body and flavour and the Neapolitan sourdough base (OO flour) if not wafer thin is very crispy. The smoky cheese and vegetables all retain their individual character.  There is a slightly liberal use of salt which I don’t mind but others may pick up on more.

We have noticed folk asking for doggy bags and I have an eye for pudding so we each save a slice of our pizza to take home for ‘laters’.

The choice is simple – ice cream or affogato; suits me sir. If you ever feel the need to rekindle a love for affogato I can prescribe Padrino’s; espresso and ice cream never tasted so fine.

As we collect our doggy bags I learn that this wee pizza place if the offspring of Henry’s in Dundee a renowned café.  I make a note to visit based on my experience of Padrino’s and its honest unpretentious Italian fare. (S. Wilson)
