Aurora Modern Eatery
New Review
187 Great Junction Street,
City of Edinburgh,

Despite Leith Walk and The Shore gradually joining up gastronomically it remains a bold move to open a restaurant on Great Junction Street but squeezed amongst the vape emporiums and discount shops is Aurora Modern Eatery.

Solid recommendations led to a lunch reservation with my friend and fitness trainer Tracy Griffen and her pug Coco.

Everything feels simple at Aurora from the stripped back nod to Nordic décor to the specials written on a scroll of paper to the small selection of lunchtime plates.  I chose fish arancini with kafir and lemongrass bisque and salsa verde but could easily have stuck a pin in the menu and been happy. Three risotto balls were presented on a clean white plate with a jug of pouring bisque which was rich and aromatic. Tracy had plumped for the warm goats’ cheese, prosciutto, pickled walnuts, peach, crispy pasta sheet, tomato and balsamic.  Her food also revealed surprise sweetness from hidden strawberries which complemented the tangy cheese. Quality seasonal ingredients had been cooked and presented with deceptive simplicity, flair and respect.

Tracy suggested oysters and mine came on a bed of gin and tonic granita, pure and freshly shucked seafood from Argyle with a touch of salty and a hint of sweet.

I drank Soli, Edoardo from Bulgaria made from chardonnay, sauvignon, riesling and gewürztraminer grapes which had just the right mix of mineral, peach, honey, salt and smoke - all elements I love in a wine. Tracy had a thirst quenching pot of Japanese cherry tea and flat whites came no problem with oat milk. Aurora is on trend by including meat on the menu but also embracing plant-based dishes and choices.

Dessert was shared and spectacularly good comprising dark chocolate cheesecake beneath chewy meringue pieces, thick clotted cream and griottines I think or maybe just regular ol’ cherries soaked in alcohol but all swimming in a dark berry soup.

Opened last year Aurora is a shiny newcomer not just to Leith’s burgeoning foodie quarter but to Edinburgh and I will make a beeline to return. (S. Wilson)
