Bubbles and Bite
BITE CLUB RUNS MONTHLY DINING EVENTS AND THE IDEA FOR 'POSH FISH 'N' CHIPS CAME WHEN I VISITED COLIN CROMAR WHO RUNS THE RESTAURANT. COLIN USED TO BE A PARTNER AT THE FAMOUS ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR IN THE EAST NEUK OF FIFE AND HE HAS TRANSPORTED THE CONCEPT OF A REALLY GOOD QUALITY FISH AND CHIP RESTAURANT TO EDINBURGH. LUCKY US!

Colin is very passionate about fish as is his partner, fish merchant Gordon Spinks, who supplies The Tailend. Our evening began with the perfect aperitif in the form of a few bottles of Bollinger from Henderson Wines in Morningside and some fishy tapas such as dressed crab. Whilst we munched, and Colin cooked, Gordon talked to us about how he trawls the coast for the freshest, seasonal catches available.

The hake was recommended for our main course, fried or grilled. I chose the healthy grilled option and the juicy tender flesh flaked from the fork and melted in my mouth. Fish is one of the most nutritious and delicious foods around and the range available at The Tailend make it a destination even for those watching their waistline. We all had bowls of chunky, golden chips to tip onto our plates and one of our members liked the food so much, he had it all twice!

Friarwood Wines of Leith conducted a wine tasting whilst we ate and the manager, Alan, recommended two reds and two whites to complement our food; a Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Clifford Bay Estate (New Zealand), a crisp light Picpoul de Pinet 2006 Domaine Saint Peyre ( Languedoc), a fruity, medium bodied Beaujolais, Fleuris 2006 Domaine Lardy and a Tempranillo 2005, Oreades (Navarra).

The evening ended with some lovely, creamy Luca's ice cream, tea and coffee and a prize draw where Bite Club gave away two tickets to the foodie festival, Taste.
