"We actually stay in the rooms when there is availability just to check everything is just so.”

These words are music to my ears. I am speaking with Amy Kerr owner, along with her husband Mark, of this bijou and stylish hotel in Morningside.

I have visited a lot of hotels and it is attention to detail that marks the best from the rest. I once stayed in a lovely room with large sunken bath surrounded by candles albeit with no means of lighting them!

At The Lane the small things please me inordinately. There is a large glass bottle of water provided alongside the Strathmore sparkling. The thermostat has a simple well-lit, digital display. The spacious shower is ‘walk-in’. It’s well worth noting that there is a fully adapted room for disabled guests too.

Tea and coffee, a large flat screen and fluffy towels are de-rigueur. Interiors are painted immaculately with a calming palette of dove grey and white, accents of subtle texture come from armchair, headboard and bedding. It helps that Amy has studied interior design. It’s very relaxing; the soundtrack to this room would be Katie Melua or Eva Cassidy.

The street is quiet too as there is no passing traffic in Canaan Lane. The hotel is annexed to the famous Canny Man’s, a family business which Mark helps run.The Lane has six rooms but there are plans for six more above the pub and one serviced apartment.

Breakfasts are also coming soon. At present you can visit the pub which opens at 9am or go to nearby cafes. Blackwood Coffee literally two minutes away sells very plump fruit scones and meantime there is a ‘snack room’ with espresso machine, cereals, crisps, dishwasher and fridges.

The Lane has actually been nominated as a finalist in the Style Awards this weekend. If you are looking for somewhere for friends, relatives or business associates it’s a shoo-in or you could just luxuriate for a night yourself. (S. Wilson)
