Bluebird Cafe
New Review
5 Canonmills,
City of Edinburgh,
Open everyday 7.30am-4pm

Bluebird could have been called Freebird. This unassuming corner spot cafe in Canonmills serves southern US food inspired by the female owner's travels around America on a Harley. The menu stops short of ‘grits' but the cafe has a rep for dishes such as meatloaf and pulled pork.

Despite this, it also caters very well for ‘free-from' food including gluten-free, veggies and vegans.

I squeezed myself into a corner seeking refuge from last months 'beast from the east'.

It was brunch time and I ordered a vegan burrito with 'cowboy caviar' (black beans, sweet corn, celery). Service is a bit slow because everything is cooked from scratch and with great care. My tortilla was toasted golden, stuffed full of veg, sour cream and chilli and with a pot of freshly smashed guacamole on the side. Garnished with fresh herbs this was a tasty, filling wholesome dish.

I noted a finger roll with pulled jackfruit and avocado graced the specials board and watched plates of buttermilk pancakes, bacon and maple syrup sail past to the tables of fellow diners. With just 10 places Bluebird would really benefit from bigger premises. I have no idea how they fit live music into the space but they do.

There were brownies on offer alongside a selection of cakes and scones, walnut, and blueberry or cream egg. I chose the former and it was toothsome, melty and was studded with nuts and fruit.

An almond latte from super fresh tasting Artisan Roast motored me up the hill from Canonmills to York Place but I will be heading down again soon. Bluebird is a superb little pit stop.

Open everyday 7.30am-4pm
