One thing's for sure Mia is a very popular restaurant. It had only been open a couple of months when me and Mr Bite visited but it was already No.3 on Trip Advisor. We were a little taken aback by just how busy it was for a Monday evening.  Perhaps this is because the portions are as generous as Mamma’s.

Bruschetta piled high with tomato sailed by as we examined the menu. I chose antipasti vegetariano (£5.50) and Mr Bite had pepate di cozze (£6.75) mussels in a tomato sauce. Char-grilled aubergines and courgettes, large discs of sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes and glossy red and yellow peppers were served with sublime mozzarella; milky and melting, we both agreed "Oh my god, it's sooo good!" 

Mr Bite was very happy with his mussels too. Every shell appeared to reveal both mollusc and cherry tomato, whilst the sauce was a delicious soup of tomatoes, garlic, aromatic herbs and olive oil.

He was getting into the spirit of things and ordered Steak Rossini (£19.95) filet mignon with duck pate and a cherry liqueur sauce. Rich, sweet and artery-challenging, he devoured it with gusto. Naturally whippet-thin he is trying his hardest for a middle age spread. I went for the lighter (by comparison) linguini vongole e rucola (£10.95). Peppery rocket and fiery garlic mingled with clams that tasted of sea spray and al dente pasta cooked in properly salted water.  The balance of flavours was just right. Green-tinged olive oil and white wine dribbled down my chin more than once. At Mia you don your chequered napkin and get stuck in. A very dry Pinot Grigio from an all-Italian wine list complemented the pasta beautifully.

We had three desserts (I know!), tiramisu, blackcurrant cheesecake and ice cream. The surprise star was the cheesecake; thick and creamy with a good crunchy biscuity base - cue Masterchef remix. 

A glance around Mia ticked every demographic box, businessmen, group of girls, Italian male, loved-up couple, tourists, families and reading professor in corner. Clearly people have warmed to this local Italian with its friendly ambience and value for money menu. (S. Wilson)
