The Printing Press, formerly The Tempus, is part of The Principal, formerly The George Hotel and one of five Georgian Townhouses that now make up the venue as a whole. Now we've got that out of the way shall we chat about the food. 

The test of a good roast of course rests to a large extent on two things; the quality of the Yorkshire puddings and whether it's as good as your mum's.

The Printing Press passes on the first. The puds were well risen, crunchy and had good flavour. They had obviously been cooked in sizzling, spitting fat. Top marks.

I had the lamb and Mr Bite had the beef. I was advised beforehand that the lamb came 'cooked through' but it was still a bit disappointing as I am so used to tender pink flesh these days. Tatties, veg and gravy were 'fine to good' with the greens disappointing too; those squeaky green ones with shreds of cabbage running through. I would much have preferred traditional peas, Savoy or broccoli. Mr Bite thought the whole thing was top notch and scraped his plate lasciviously but we both agreed it was never going to beat mum’s. 

Rhubarb crumble with custard is exactly the pudding that should be on the menu and I have to say, here Chef excelled. Presented in a ramekin with a wee jug of custard I have rarely had better (my Norwegian pal does a pretty good Jamie Oliver one). The fruit (veg?) was both sweet and tart in all the right places, the crumble was crunchy, biscuity and moreish to the extreme. Custard was deliciously decadent. Lordy lord. 

Surroundings are stunning, service professional and friendly, the cocktail list looks particularly tempting, Scottish ales are lacking. The flat white was superb. They purchase beans from hipster outfit Caravan Coffee and roast them in-house. 

More than enough to tempt me back then and I shall be investigating lunch further and going into Burr for coffee and goodies too. (S. Wilson)
