TWENTY MINUTES FROM EDINBURGH OROCCO PIER IS A STRONG CONTENDER FOR THE BEST VIEW IN SCOTLAND; SEATED AT THE WINDOW YOU CAN ALMOST TOUCH THE SKY BLUE FORTH AND THE MIGHTY BRIDGE THAT TOWERS ABOVE IT. THE WATER TRAFFIC PROVIDES FASCINATING ENTERTAINMENT AND WITH SEAFOOD A SPECIALITY ON THE SUPERB MENU A VISIT TO THIS RESTAURANT SERVES UP A SLICE OF SCOTTISH HEAVEN.

My partner started with the broccoli and stilton soup (£3.25) which was excellent, the stilton shining through. I had pan-fried pigeon breast on roasted beets, hazelnuts, wild mushrooms and rocket (£6.95). Pink, juicy meat, sweet crunchy nuts and deep, tangy beets combined to make a sublimely earthy, textural dish that was both delicious and exciting.

Mains were a half lobster grilled in garlic butter with puffy chips and salad (£19.95) for my partner and pan-fried fillets of sea bass with chorizo on black olives, sweet tomatoes and lemon thyme for me (£15.95). The lobster was superb value and came with a large fresh salad and a man sized portion of thick chips. We would have preferred aioli and less chips but I will still order this dish next time I visit. My bass was fresh and tasty, the chorizo rich and smoky and the oven roasted tomatoes bursting with juicy sweetness.

Desserts were a Limoncello and blackberry Italian trifle (£4.45) for me, light alcohol infused sponge and inch thick cocoa dusted cream, whilst my partner had sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream (£4.25), light, sweet and syrupy.

We had washed down our meal with an excellent French Sauvignon Blanc and a couple of dessert wines but were having such a good time that we decided to order cocktails, a Paris Martini for me and an Amber Martini for my partner.

There are many ways I could sum up our wonderful evening at Orocco Pier but I want to reserve the last sentence for the staff. The service was the friendliest and most competent that I have experienced in a long time. Well done guys!
