The Pantry at home

Updated: Jun 7, 2020

By Eleonora Vanello

The Pantry aka the brunch institution in Stockbridge, recently launched its ‘at-home menu’. Owners Charlotte and Chris Thompson established this foodie spot in 2012, and ever since they have been serving breakfasts, brunches, lunches and offering catering services for private events. You might have spotted their Tuck Truck around the Capital during the festivals. Their brand new COVID-friendly service offers ready meals with contact-less delivery to to the Lothians and city; perfect for a fancy lunch or dinner. A wide range of dishes draws inspiration from countries such as Mexico, Poland, Italy and Morocco while an intuitive website details the ingredients, serving etc.Kids options are also available. I chose two dishes chicken, roots + leeks and halloumi and preserved lemon and chickpea tagine, yoghurt, and cumin dressing. Both served two, and cost a very competitive £25. Free delivery on orders over £20. When my food arrived, I was delighted to see a young man wearing a mask, observing social-distancing. I loved the packaging with a transparent window to show the two colourful meals with their dressings and cards with the cooking and freezing instructions. Twenty minutes in the oven and it’s ready to eat! The chickpea tagine was delicious and saucy with a prominent flavour of harissa and crispy halloumi. Preserved lemon gave extra freshness to the dish, and the yoghurt dressing was a foil to the spiciness. The roasted chicken, instead, retained its succulence despite its reheating. The grilled leeks perfectly complemented the chicken as in a BBQ dream. The roots rosti were hearty but, in my opinion, overpowered by rosemary. The dish description mentioned a wine sauce, but it tasted more like a light white curry sauce, but I thought it was a better pairing. A glass of wine or a beer and you have a delightful meal. I truly enjoyed the simplicity and authenticity of this food. Highly recommended for the whole family. Without doubt, I am going to order again, especially knowing their famous brunch dishes will be on the menu soon!
