Welcome to Bite, Your Independent Local Guide to Eating and Drinking in Edinburgh

Being a gourmet has its downside (yes, really). The great Jonathan Meades, restaurant critic of The Times newspaper between 1986 and 2001, reckoned he put on a good few stone from puddings alone and look at Michael Winner pre-food poisoning. Suffice to say, a penchant for the good life has a flip-side which manifests itself in sometimes desperate bouts of running, swimming and eating very nutritious, healthy food.
Packaged and so-called 'healthy foods' are so often a con. For example, they are labelled low- fat but are full of sugar or they have healthy ingredients but are full of fat (flapjacks and oatcakes spring to mind - although the latter does depends on the brand, so check).
If you are watching your weight you really do need to become obsessive about reading labels.
I am; and so was overjoyed when I discovered Nakd Bars. My micro-inspection of the nutritional information on the label revealed that they did indeed deliver. Billed as Raw Food Bars they have 100% raw ingredients. The  35 gram bar flavours include Cashew Cookie, Cocoa Orange, Ginger Bread, Pecan Pie. They are all natural which in this case translates as no added sugar, gluten, wheat, dairy & GM free, just raw fruit and nuts. They are virtually fat-free and what little fat there is comes from the nuts which are nutritional power houses. The 68 gram bars come in three flavours, Nakd Apple Pie, Nakd Berry Cheeky, and my personal favourite Nakd Cocoa Loco. They are a perfect , healthy pre-or post exercise snack and taste delicious.
Bite has teamed up with Nakd and Real Foods  to offer all readers a free bar as a festival treat. Just go along with your copy of Bite.  (S Wilson)
