The Pop-up Champagne Bar will be at the Signet Library from 3rd August through to 27th August 2012 and will be open from 11am until late.

Pop ups have gained in popularity over the past few years and none more so than this Edinburgh Festival Champagne Bar.
Fizz, fancy cakes and the timeless elegance of the surroundings have been key to its popularity and I have to confess I have been first in the queue for two years running.

We went along for afternoon tea with champagne and were presented with a plate of savouries and a tower of treats. The best of the sandwiches, Mr Bite and I concurred, were the salmon with crème fraîche; scones with hummus, sun-dried tomato and a balsamic glaze a close second. We sipped our champagne with our savouries, Pommery is a more or less equal blend of chardonnay, meunier and pinot; it has plenty of tiny racing bubbles and a floral nose.

Next we chose our tea, Belfast Brew by Suki Teas for Mr Bite and Lipton's peppermint tea for me. The former could have been stronger and I would have liked some fresh mint but hey-ho.

We turned our attention to the Eiger-style challenge of the cake stand. With gusto, I scooped up a square of moist banana cake, its pale luscious cream topping and dusting of coconut was delicate and flavoursome. The carrot cake by contrast was rustic with plenty of nuts and fruit. Chocolate brownies were glacier-sized slabs of dark moistness; my favourite cake however, was the classic millionaire shortbread. Truffles were disappointing, treacle scones came with wonderfully tart deep purple blackcurrant jam and small glasses of whipped cream.

As we reluctantly left the sedate 'pinkies-out'' atmosphere of the library for the frenzy of the Royal Mile we contemplated our return visit. You see this year the menu has been extended, and includes whole roast East coast lobster with potato wedges and aioli, with of course, plenty of bubbles to wash it down!
Classic Afternoon Tea, £17 per person, with champagne, £25 per person.
