Afternoon Tea is by far my favourite meal. Nibble-sized sandwiches and sweets washed down by a cuppa. How can you go wrong? So I was keen to visit Eteaket, a relatively new tea room and shop on Frederick Street, and sample their Afternoon Tea.

My companion for the afternoon was 16-month old Leo, a discerning eater whose preferences include fruit scones, crumpets and cupcakes. He also demands understanding and quick service, and plenty of interesting things to look at. Would Eteaket live up to his standards?

We decided to share an afternoon tea for one (£9.85) and chose our brew from an expansive and thorough menu of over 40 choices which included such teas as Organic Silver Needle, Jasmine Pearls, and Rock the Casbah. I had Royal Earl Grey while Leo stuck to his sippy cup of water. The pot came with a timer to brew my tea either weak, medium, or strong, depending on my preference. Leo thought this was great, and I agreed.

Soon followed a beautiful three-tier cake stand filled with cakes and sandwiches. While sandwiches can often be the weak point of an afternoon tea, the sarnies here were exceptional. Offered a choice from six options which ranged from pastrami, Swiss, gherkins and mustard to falafel and hummus and oak-smoked ham with cheddar and chutney. We went for the mozzarella, pesto and sun blushed tomatoes, served on delicious thick bread. It was fabulous, and worth noting that their sandwiches are all available to take away throughout the day.

From there, Leo devoured a beautifully iced fairy cake and brownie while I tried the caramel shortbread and flapjack. We agreed they were delicious, and Leo gleefully smeared purple icing on his cheeks in tribute. The scone with cream and jam was similarly disposed of, and I pronounced our afternoon tea a complete success.

Eteaket sells all of their teas for home brewing, as well as a full range of tea accessories and gifts (including the tiered cake stands). Offering a full lunch and breakfast menu to sit-on or take-away, as well as cream and afternoon teas, Eteaket is just my cup of tea. I'll certainly be back, with or without my small companion.
