Last month Bite produced a whole feature on Scottish beer and micro-breweries so we thought we’d follow up this month with Edinburgh’s very own success story. Stewart Brewing started trading in 2004 with Jo and Steve Wilson at the helm. They now supply 200 pubs in Scotland and Newcastle.
As well as draught beers, mini-kegs are also available at the Farmer's market and independent off-licenses such as Henderson Wines in Morningside, Appellation Wines in Dalry and Cornelius on Easter Rd. Also available is their excellent and tasty range of premium bottled beers.
Hollyrood – Pale, light and hoppy, 5% abv. Light to medium bodied with citrus notes. Try with tiger prawns in garlic butter, char- grilled chicken, pan-fried sea bass or burger and chips.
Edinburgh Gold – Premium gold beer, 4.8% abv. Full bodied, sweet and smooth with caramelised orange notes. Try with grilled salmon and sweet chilli salsa, seared king scallops or goats’ cheese and sun-dried tomato tart.
Embra – Classic, amber beer, 5% abv. Full-bodied, fruity and soft. Try with herbed pork tenderloin, duck breast with wild mushrooms, smoked chicken risotto.
St Giles – Dark, malty and smooth, 5% abv. Robust but smooth, chocolate and roasted malt. Try with Scottish sirloin steak, haggis. Stovies or pan-fried medallions of venison.
Dopplebock – German-style, strong, dark lager. Brewed according to ‘Reinheitsgebot Purity Laws’ using Munich malt and Saaz hops. Sweet, malty and chocolatey. Try with dark puds!
Pilsen – A classic pilsner, 5.6% abv. Brewed using lager yeast, lager malt and Sazz hops. Dry and hoppy so would cut through fatty fish nicely.
