Restaurants often intrigue me due to their name or location and this was the case with  'The White Witch: Italian Food & Scottish Mood', a relatively new cafè/restaurant in Broughton Street.

I felt the magic as soon as I spied a beautiful plate of Sicilian cannoli in the glass display which showcases the best of Italian pastries available in the area.

For savoury Italian fare 'Witch taglieri' (sharing boards) appears popular on Facebook and when you are offered a complimentary tidbit whilst drinking your spritz, that's what I call APERITIVO.

Dinner with a couple of friends on a Friday night revealed a homely atmosphere and we ordered the vegetarian witch tagliere, a charcuterie one, three piadine (Italian of wraps) and a bottle of wine - obviously. Sara the owner brought us some crisps and olives to nibble on alongside our Vermentino di Sardegna whilst we waited for our order.

Luckily we were pretty hungry as the two boards were big and lush containing Italian charcuterie like bresaola, salami and hams; cheeses, aged and fresh (also my beloved stracchino); fruits; salad and super yummy bruschette with interesting spreads such as black truffle, olive patè and tuna. Presentation is a salivatory triumph.

Piadine came next and we enjoyed the familiar taste of Italian wraps, this time filled with vegetables, sausage and fresh cheese’ typical street food from the Emilia Romagna region.

We really were stuffed but as Italians do we ordered a coffee to call the night, a cannolo just to never give up and a shot of digestivo. Cannolo is directly imported from Sicily and it was sweet and tasty but I would have preferred more crunch to the shell. 

The magic wand/broomstick detail on the coffee spoon prompted me to ask Sara why she chose to name her venue ‘The White Witch', to which she responded that she simply ‘might believe in white wizardry’.

My friends and I are already planning to return for a breakfast the Italian way; cornetto and cappuccino. And having that in Edinburgh is powerful magic. (E. Vanello)
