With another year coming to an end, it has been a pleasure to explore the females who grow, make and sell some of Scotland's amazing produce, but there is another group of foodie femme fatales. They are the unsung food heroes - the informers, the educators, the warriors, who, to me, are the backbone of our food culture. These women are important because they support the future. They encourage the young to experiment, they provide food for those who are struggling to feed their families, they educate us about what is important, inform us of what is happening within the food industry. Some of them you know, some you won't. This is a wee tribute to them, to say thank you for their passion, determination and resilience. Joanna Blythman has supported the Errington family, keeping us informed of the raw milk debacle. Vivian Maeda is responsible for 'Food for Thought', an initiative whereby she introduces schoolchildren to cooking with the help of local chefs. Gillianne Rodger is a board member for Leith Community Crops in Pots that encourages Leithers to grow vegetables and flowers for bees, in urban spaces. Beth Berry is the woman behind the markets in Stockbridge, Leith and the Grassmarket. Rachel Gillon who writes the 'Wee Pinch of Sugar' blog, showing us what we can to do with leftovers. The women at Punjabi Junction, a Social Enterprise Community Café on Leith Walk. With so many inspiring women, there isn't enough room to mention them all, but one person who inspires me the most is Sharon Wilson. Yes she is the editor of Bite, yes she puts up with a load of shite from me, but what she has done for her community is astounding. She has brought about a community orchard and garden, a community cafe where volunteers cook and serve meals to the locals, as well as helping at her local food bank. These women humble me and I believe, with all my heart, these truly are our food heroes. Well done ladies, I salute you!
