Bite popped in for a late lunch on opening day to take a look at the Ivy’s latest offshoot.

Outside, on the corner of St Andrew Square by Jenners, the new building looks sleek & inviting.  Within, the traditional diamond-paned glass panels synonymous with the London Ivy feature in an updated take on their famous ‘30s inspired green & gold décor, along with contemporary block colour prints featuring Scottish inventions and symbols.  A smart team of staff awaited the public on this first official day.

Even the à la carte menu, at eg £13.50 for their classic shepherd’s pie, is keenly priced, but we opted for the straightforward lunch/early eve menu with 3 choices at each course, £16.50 for 2 courses/£21 for three.  Drinks are also affordably priced, their classic cocktails in particular (I enjoyed a Negroni set of 3 mini Negroni versions for £9 – my favourite twist being the pink grapefruit & bourbon).

It was also a talking point, resulting in the 3 tables along our leather upholstered banquette indulging in very un-Edinburgh animated conversation(!), adding to our enjoyment overall.

By this time on Day 1, the salmon starter was sold out so we enjoyed a seasonal roast pumpkin soup, with noticeably truffled ricotta and crispy sage, and a simple but sizeable and very tasty ham hock croquette with chunky remoulade.

Mains saw me with crisply-skinned soft sea bream with a full silver jug of sublime classic Champagne & snipped chives velouté, with fresh fennel, sweet green apple & watercress.  My other half gave full marks to perfect roast chicken suprème & rich sauce on olive mash.  Simple but perfectly done and delivered (an initial delay, apologised for, had been down to chef not being satisfied with the first chicken.  We were well satisfied with his second.)

The most picture-perfect award though, goes to our dessert of rich chocolate mousse.  A mix of freeze-dried and plump fresh raspberries joined its crunchy salted caramel topping.

Open all day and evening all the time, this is a winner from the get-go, with tables already booked out for the remainder of the year.  Some cracking views to be had, particularly upstairs, on the right tables. Be there and be ‘on the Square’! (The Go-Between)
