Walking in Stockbridge a few months ago, I noticed an "opening soon” sign for a restaurant with an Italian name, Radici and ever since I had wanted to check it out. Last Sunday, it was open and it was dinner time so my friends and I decided to give it a go.

The logo of "Radici”, Roots in English, represents a beautiful tree with branches and roots and plays on the opposition of the colours black and white. This game of colours is reproduced within the restaurant giving a very neat look and a feeling of calm. A smiling sommelier, Giovanni, walked us to our table and handed over the menu from which it was evident to me that the two chefs, Mara and Dario were interested in organic and sustainable food and wine.

We kick started our evening by ordering a Sauvignon Ronco delle Betulle from Friuli Venezia Giulia. Starters and mains followed rapidly.

We first had asparagus wrapped in smoked salmon served with Italian Robiola cheese and croutons: the dish had a very romantic appeal, thanks to the use of edible flowers, and we couldn’t wait for the first bite. We then had toasted sourdough bread with wild black truffle from Marche region and fresh spinach, toasted walnut, pumpkin seeds, parmesan and bread croutons salad. Both dishes were very simple and balanced but they lacked WOW factor.

For my main dish I decided to go for handmade gnocchi with Guanciale and Pecorino cheese in an asparagus sauce; the portion was generous and as I am a fan of authentic gnocchi I can say with some authority that these ones were well up to standard.

My friend went for some carbohydrate too and ordered handmade ravioli stuffed with walnut cream in a wild black truffle sauce, the two main flavours balanced together beautifully in the mouth and the velvety consistency delivered a yummy experience. Definitely my favourite dish! My other friend opted for meat in the shape of grilled lamb chops served with black cabbage and handmade round chips. The dish came with a fresh lemon slice that added spark to the well cooked lamb and to the crispy potatoes.

Radici offers a homely atmosphere and gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options.

The venue is ‘piccolo’ so advanced bookings are recommended. (E. Vanello) See all our Italian restaurant reviews here
