Owl and Deer is a people watching paradise. Even though I am totally engaged in a catch up with Simone I can't help my gaze occasionally drifting over her shoulder. Full ground to ceiling windows with a 'top 'o the walk' view ensure a return visit for good coffee or a lazy brunch but tonight is about dinner. 

The busy daytime cafe morphs into a bistro on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6.30 pm. It is early days and so a bit quiet when we visit but that suits us. We appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of somewhere we can talk easily and enjoy really good food. 

Simone opts for both of my secret choices from the menu and first off is oak-smoked salmon, prawns, horseradish cream and lime vinaigrette. It passes. Simone praises the assertively flavoured salmon which is luscious and generously cut. I have beetroot carpaccio which indulges my love of this root. The slices mingle with morsels of chicken coated in a sweet, slightly caramelised chilli sauce.

Simone tucks into my second secret choice for main course, loin of venison with broccoli and stilton purée and red wine jus. Tender and tasty is  the verdict. I had the sea bass with garden vegetables and a caviar and champagne sauce; all was even better than it sounded. The bass flesh was toasted golden and the skin had the deal breaker crispiness.  The veg comprised, just-charred spring greens including super seasonal asparagus and half cut Jersey Royals with their unique flavour. Seasoning came courtesy of caviar, creaminess from the sauce but all perfectly balanced too. 

The waitress recommended the red poached pear for pudding and I pounced. A perfect sphere of ice cream, a wee biscuity crunch on the side; braw! Simone had chosen well too with petits meringues, summer fruits, Chantilly cream and chocolate shards. Meringue was chewy inside, snappy out – heaven on a plate. 

Owl and Deer has a really well thought out menu for the bistro offering and is a convenient location for the theatre and the neighbourhood alike. Check it out. (S. Wilson)
