Hope springs eternal
March often signifies a shift in tempo; people creep out of the old habits of winter and start to believe that it won’t be dark forever. It’s when you see neighbours you haven’t seen for 6 months and possibilities seem to just open up. Unlike the forced experience of January diets and new year’s resolutions we seem to find ourselves naturally bolder and more energetic, inspired by nature’s own energy. Unfortunately, Scotland’s larder hasn’t quite caught up and March veg boxes are often slim pickings with little glimpse of the joys of what’s to come later in the year.
Which is where wine can step up and add some interest. Many people don’t think of wine as an ‘ingredient’ in your meal, not in the context of add a whole bottle of wine to your spag bol, but in the sense that what you’re drinking influences the overall feel and flavour of your dish. A heavy red will add earthy notes, richness and comfort to a meal whereas a light white will lift certain dishes and add zing and freshness. The flavours play a part too; wine can add another layer of deliciousness to your dinner so it’s worth thinking about what you might want a drizzle or sprinkle of and seeing if you can find some of that in a wine.
To add some ‘spring’ flavours to your wine rack you might look to this Mount Horrocks Semillon, an under-the-radar grape that has an interesting combination of blossom-like aromatics but a rich, smooth texture which makes it the equivalent of wearing scarf and sunglasses (as often required in March). It’s a classy wine with layers of apple blossom, cooked apple that is mouth-puckeringly good, with a creamy texture and delicious aftertaste.
