Scotland's best kept hidden larder secrets in the Kingdom of Fife

Foodie flagship event of the Autumn, 'Eat Drink Discover Scotland', has teamed up with celebrity chef Mark Greenaway to embark on a mission - to discover the secret ingredients that Scottish cooks just simply have to have in the pantry. And this week's search takes Mark to the Kingdom of Fife- a place known for quality seafood thanks to a coastal path that runs for 117 miles and a strong heritage of fishing trade.
The public is being invited to reveal their favourite Scottish 'secret ingredients' by detailing what they are and where they're purchased.  The criteria range from herbs to condiments, alcohol to meats and even vegetables, providing they are either grown or produced in Scotland. Applicants are being encouraged to be as unpredictable, creative and unusual as possible. Mark and the Eat Drink Discover team will draw up a shortlist of the best entrants who will be invited to join him in a 'cook off' at the event, where the winner will be chosen.  The producer or retailer who supplied the winner with their 'secret ingredient' will be given a free exhibition stand at next year's event. 
The Eat Drink Discover team spoke to a few of Fife's best local produce shops - Loch Leven's Larder situated on the north side of Loch Leven and Ardross Farm shop situated just outside Elie.
Loch Leven's Larder is a great example of a retailer stocking local produce - their deli features a wide range of Scottish cheeses and cold meats and the shop with locally sourced produce, daily essentials, a selection of wines and fabulous home made bread and cakes. 
Ardross Farm Shop produces their own traditionally reared beef as well as 52 varieties of vegetables, everything from carrots to pumpkins.    The Ardross Kitchen is a hive of activity and is always filled with the mouth-watering smells of homemade soups, jams, pies, burgers, home baking and much more.   Nikki Storrar, Manager of Ardross said, “We recently won the UK Farm Shop of the Year and this was really down to the amazing amount of wonderful produce which is produced in Fife and from the sea around the area"
Fife has an abundance of foodie treats - Cairnie Fruit Farm in Cupar has fields of succulent strawberries and blackcurrants and stocks their best-selling jam. For more fruity surprises, Newburgh is a town renowned for its fruit orchards, where people can sample locally grown plums, apples and pears.  Farmer's markets take place every Saturday on rotation in one of the four main Fife towns of Kirkcaldy, St Andrews, Dunfermline and Cupar, providing the opportunity to savour all the delicacies of Fife.
Eat Drink Discover Scotland, which is taking place at the Royal Highland Centre between 12th and 14th September, will bring to life the rich diversity of Scotland's brimming larder by featuring exhibitors from the length and breadth of the country.  One for the foodies, it will be offering something for every palate, plate and price range and, with a regional focus, it will be providing opportunities for smaller rural food producers to share centre stage with more established brands.  The weekend will also include demonstrations and master classes such as chocolate workshops, cocktail making, game butchery and craft bakery.
Mark Greenaway said: “It's all too easy to keep using the same ingredients for the same dishes, so this competition is all about discovering new ingredients and new ways of using them. I'll be sharing my favourite products from the length and breadth of Scotland on my website's blog, suggesting ways to make the most of them. But I want others to follow suit and share their favourites with me. This is what food and cooking should be about and, with Scotland's truly amazing larder, I'm sure I'll find it extremely difficult to choose a winner."

      The competition will only feature produce that's either grown or produced in Scotland. 
      There are eleven regional zones and one winner from each zone will be selected.
